Just watched The Last Starfighter for the first time

(I’m going to put all my movie reactions for my New Year’s resolution under the tag “1year100movies” in case you want to Tumblr savior it, even though it should only be a couple of posts a week. I know no one really follows me for my stunning movie insights. :P )

But seriously that was a really good movie (and now I really want to get a shirt with the Starfighter logo on it). It got major points in my book for one reason- I actually liked the main character. I felt like he was a good guy who was genuinely making the most logical decisions at every point in the movie, which hardly every happens when I watch one of these “ordinary person asked to save galaxy against will” movies. His scenes with his love interest were genuinely cute too, and I liked her as well.

Though out of all the supporting characters, I actually really liked Beta for some strange reason, and one of my only complaints is how that plotline ends kinds of…dismissively, to avoid any more spoilery terms. The final battle against the enemy fleet was kind of anticlimactic too, but it didn’t bother me TOO much since the movie’s obvious focus was more on the characters than the action, and Alex’s plotline is resolved just fine.

I was actually going to just post that gif originally, and not actually type my thoughts, but since most of the reviews I’ve seen are from people who saw this movie as a kid, I felt compelled to write up what it was like watching it without any nostalgia goggles. Short answer, it was genuinely fun. Not the best movie ever, but definitely worth watching if you’re in the mood for light-hearted scifi.
